The 20th (can you believe it!) Zora Neale Hurston Festival starts this week. There will be all sorts of events, and the end is a street party festival along Kennedy Blvd. this next weekend. My guests are very excited about walking down the street to go to it...only 1/2 mile from Thurston House. It should be fabulous!

New at the Enzian Theater!

We are very fortunate to have a special theater just minutes away from Thurston House, bed & breakfast. It is the Enzian Theater, an independent movie house. Recently there has been a wonderful new addition, the Eden Bar. It is an outside patio bar that offers Austrian specials on the menu. Try their new Austrian wines and beers, a great way to start your evening before going inside to watch a movie, or to relax after a great film. We were just there last night to see the movie MILK, excellent and thought provoking! This theater is also home to the Florida Film Festival, this year held 3/27-4/5.

Sunday walk and what did we see?

We took a beautiful walk yesterday over to our local farmer's market. Got some Winter Park Honey bears and a great big lemon! I think I can make 10 lemon breads from that lemon! On the way back we visited neighbors who have a great hobby...driving their 1931 Model A. They were all spiffed up for their yearly Christmas gathering and were just heading out. Joe wanted to make you think this was his! It does fit nicely with the ambience of Thurston House, our Maitland bed & breakfast near Winter Park.

Eatonville, the oldest incorporated African American municipality (1887) in the US, is just down the street from us. We often head down their main street on our morning walks. This shot was taken last week. The beautiful brick sidewalks and many street lights glow with holiday decorations. Come stay at Thurston House bed & breakfast and take a stroll back in time.

Holidays at the Waterhouse Museum

This historic house museum reflects the life of a middle class Victorian family during the early days of the city of Maitland. The home was originally built by Maitland resident and carpenter William Waterhouse in 1884.

"Holidays at the Waterhouse" runs from November 12, 2008-January 11, 2009. Visitors to the Waterhouse Residence Museum will find a fabulous Victorian Christmas. Trees, decorations, and traditions fill the home representing a combination of both Victorian and typical Floridian Christmas decor. Guests will find an extra treat on their tour as they get to search for the annual visitor, the Waterhouse Mouse!

The museum is just a short walk or ride from Thurston House, bed & breakfast.

Our beautiful Thurston House, an Orlando area bed and breakfast, is getting a much needed face lift to the front wrap around porch. This lakefront setting has been the location for many discussions through the years, and lots of world problems have been solved over a glass of wine here. To handle all of this work, Thurston House is temporarily closed...difficult to get inside with no porch floor! Look for our grand reopening BY 11/7. It will be better than ever. Come and help us break in the new porch.

Boy, what a strange storm we have been having here. I was lucky enough to miss most of it. I was supposed to fly back from Boston 8/12, but after getting a Delta advisory Monday that said I could change no charge to avoid the storm, I came home last night. It was a bit of a bumpy last 30 minutes! We even had to detour and go around St. Petersburg then into Orlando. The ride home to Thurston House was even worse, with power outages, heavy rain & wind, tree branches down..... Well, this crazy storm seems to really be leaving us now. We have been experiencing the outer parts of it since yesterday, but the rain finally stopped and I think the sun wants to peak out. Joe & I know what we will be doing tomorrow, picking up the multitudes of branches and leaves that are everywhere! We are safe & sound though so that's what counts.

Lake Eola Park

Downtown Orlando is only 5 miles from Thurston House and makes for a nice place to explore. You can head down to Lake Eola Park and just stroll around. It makes for a nice, lazy day. There are swan boats to rent, interesting gazebo's to sit in, a playground for kids, a WWII Battle of the Bulge monument (look for my Dad's memorial brick, Corporal Albert H. Webber) and a spectacular fountain right in the middle of the lake. Every Sunday there is a great farmer's market too!

Orlando's Jewish Community Center is located in Maitland just minutes from Thurston House. It has grown a lot since we have been here the past 17 years. It is the hub of Jewish life in Central Florida, providing social, cultural and fitness programs to the community. Everything from lectures, research library, classes for all ages, fitness programs, etc. is available here.

Spectacular Leu Gardens...

Leu Gardens is in the City of Orlando, and only 15 minutes drive from Thurston House. Roaming around their many acres of lake front park is the perfect way to while away a day. You can even escape the heat by taking the Historic Leu House tour. An interesting fact is when I worked in corporate life, my "other life" in Massachusetts, I worked for a Fortune 500 manufacturing company. Harry P. Leu was one of it's biggest distributors at that time. When you are in the house, his office desk has a copy of his industrial tools offerings, with Norton Company prominantly displayed...small world. There is always something new blooming at the gardens, from roses to camellia's and lots of butterfly loving plants...just beautiful!

Renninger's World Famous Antique & Collectors Extravaganza's are coming....PLAN AHEAD!!!! Each season Renninger's has only three HUGE extravanganza's. They run from Friday through Sunday and attract dealer's & buyer's from all over. The first one of the fall/winter season is 11/14-11/16. The following two are 1/16/09-1/18/09 and 2/20/09-2/22-09. These are some of the most popular months to be in central Florida so plan ahead! Mt. Dora, home to the extravaganza's, is less than a 30 minute drive from Thurston House. Accommodations are limited so book as soon as possible!

Of course Renninger's is open every weekend too. There are many dealers who are set up there on a permanent basis.

I was just finishing up today's yard duties and did a walk-around. Hiding in our natural area to the left of the incoming driveway are these beautiful ginger plants. We have had them for years, but they have traveled around the yard some to see which area they like it best. Looks like this is it! We have enjoyed guests from all over the world - 50 states, 21 countries and 3 territories! Of course they always want to know where we are from and how we got here. This is where I grew up - Holden, Massachusetts. It was a small town just north of Worcester, in the center of the state. It is now a bustling community of approx 20,000 residents! Quite a change from its' incorporation in 1741. When I lived there it was a quiet and wonderful place to grow up. In doing Thurston Family research I learned that a Thurston cousin is buried in the antique cemetery that is located right in the town square area that is depicted in these prints.....small world!

In my "other" life I worked at a Fortune 500 Company in Massachusetts - Norton Company. I was actually the 4th generation to work at this abrasives company. Their original products were ceramic jugs, crocks and that type of thing. This is one from my great-Grandfather, who also was employed by them. Ironically, this company started in 1885, the same year this house was completed! Come visit this Orlando area bed & breakfast - Thurston House - and check it our for yourselves!

How did Maitland get it's name?

Originally this city was called Fumecheliga (Musk Mellon Place) by the Seminole Indians. Established in 1838, Fort Maitland was a military fort built by the United States Army. It was built as a supply depot during the Second Seminole War. The fort was named after Captain William Seton Maitland, who was injured during the Battle of Wahoo Swamp (pictured here) and later died of his injuries. Ironically, he was never in this area!

At that time, the only way of getting to Central Florida was by boat from Jacksonville down the St. Johns River to Fort Mellon (Sanford), then by horse or foot. Fort Maitland was a small fort built on the west shore of Lake Maitland as a rest stop between Fort Mellon and Fort Gatlin (Orlando). What is now Maitland Avenue was part of the Old Black Bear Trail which ran from Montreal, Canada to St. Petersburg, Florida, and passed by the fort.

The city was called Lake Maitland for years, then in 1959 a charter was passed to call the city Maitland. The fort is gone and the city maintains a park there, mostly used for boat access to Lake Maitland.

The Maitland name is Scottish, and we have had the pleasure of having the Vicount and Vicountess of Maitland as guests here at Thurston House. He is also the Lourde of Lauderdale with ties to the City of Fort Lauderdale. The Maitland tartan is a very colorful one as you can see here. Today's City of Maitland police cars have the Maitland Chief's Arms on their front doors.

Morse Museum of American Art Makes Big Announcement!

The Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art announced plans to build a 10,000 square-foot addition! The new space would house most of its holdings of objects and architectural elements from Laurelton Hall, Louis Comfort Tiffany's Long Island, N.Y., country estate. It would also include additional office space and triple the size of the outside courtyard garden to 4,450 square feet. Work should begin late this year and be completed by the spring of 2010.

The Daffodil Terrace from Laurelton Hall, measuring 32 feet by 18 feet, will be the architectural focal point of the addition. The recently restored terrace, supported by eight marble columns topped with bouquets of glass daffodils, has never been on view in Winter Park.

Laurelton Hall, built between 1902 and 1905 on Cold Spring Harbor, Long Island, is thought to be Tiffany's greatest work of art. The 84-room mansion was destroyed by fire in 1957. Surviving architectural elements and windows were salvaged by Hugh F. and Jeannette G. McKean are now part of the collections of the museum Jeannette McKean founded in Winter Park in 1942. This museum has always been and will continue to be a Winter Park treasure! The museum is just moments away by car from Thurston House, a Winter Park area bed & breakfast.

Enzian Theater Joins New Trend!

The Enzian Theater in Maitland is the latest to join a trend in movie theaters showing broadcasts of operas from all over the world, in this case from Milan, Italy's famed La Scala theater. Beginning this Sunday, and continuing every two weeks through the summer, La Scala's productions of Aida, La Traviata and more will be shown with digital production and surround sound. The Enzian offers a wonderul theater experience with comfortable tables & chairs, and a wide assortment of food & drink for sale. The theater is just minutes from Thurston House!

We are from Massachusetts originally and moved over 10,000 pounds of "stuff" from there to here at Thurston House in Central Florida, by way of a year in Southern California. Our guests enjoy living with our things, if only for a short time. One of the favorite things to ask about is the rack by the front door that holds brochures and items for sale. It works great for that use, but it started life in the early 1900's as a shoe rack. This would have been in a New England shoe factory. The shoes would roll from station to station on this rack as they were being made. INTERESTING... no? Have you ever seen one anywhere else?

Our friend and a local artist, Penny, does beautiful and interesting art work. She takes photos, then has a process all her own that colors it in a unique way. She has spent a lot of time taking photos here at Thurston House, especially on our wonderful porch. Everybody looks for excuses to come work on our great wraparound porch!

Del Frisco's - Still a Local Favorite!

Del Frisco's, since 1993, has been a local best choice for mouth watering steaks. According to the Zagat Guide 2007-2008 - "The best steak at any restaurant, in any city, at any price". This prime steak house is less than a 10 minutes drive from Thurston House. Advance reservations are usually a must, but I did get some last minute people in there this past Saturday night. I guess it may have something to do the the economy and places being slower than the norm? They were very pleased and said it was the best, and they have traveled the world for years!

A new exhibit opened 5/9 at the well known Maitland Art Center. It is a new collection of works by Rod Reeves featuring drawings of historic Winter Garden. The art center is a short and very pleasant stroll from Thurston House! Mark your calendars because coming August 1st is a short run exhibit that will highlight some of the new acquisitions and recent gifts to the center.

This area of Maitland and Winter Park is just beautiful, with many great restaurants, museums and fabulous shopping. But why else would people need to stay here? An upscale continuing care retirement community - The Mayflower - is just a short drive away from Thurston House. This community has everything from villas to skilled nursing care. A guest this weekend is coming in from the North East to visit parents. Having been in that situation myself, I know it is great to have quality visiting time, but equally as great to have a wonderful, relaxing place to stay!

Veterans History Project

Do you know any veterans? Honor them by telling their war story to us all. The Library of Congress has begun this fascinating project, a way to protect war stories for all generations to come. They are looking for personal stories, memories, photos and letters. I recently finished putting together my Dad's WWII story and submitted it to the library. It will take up to 6 months to finish but once everything is scanned it will be available for viewing by anyone for all time to come. My Dad died way too young and never told much about it so I am honored to do this in his memory. He was a hero! Do it now before it is too late!!!

I have talked it up to many guests here at Thurston House. One guest, a high school history teacher, even asked for a copy of two of my Dad's letters, one written from a foxhole with bombs falling around him and the other an eight page letter written day by day during the liberation of Paris - amazing stories! He wants his class to learn the subject of WWII through the eyes and ears of a real person, this gentle boy from small town Massachusetts - Corporate Albert H. Webber, 196th Field Artillery.

We had a very nice visit with friends Bob & Sadie Friday night. This happily retired couple live in Utah and were visiting their Disney timeshare. Lots of catching up to do! Recently a new mascott has been added to our porch - Baby-Beek! When the wind is just right, Baby Beek flaps it's wings and sparkles with wacky motion...very cute! Designed as an artists research colony, Andre Smith built the Maitland Art Center in 1937. On the National Register of Historic Places, the city owned center offers gallery exhibitions, art classes, lectures, a museum store and wedding & function sites. This beautiful property is surrounded with old trees, plantings, fountains and quiet open spaces. A new exhibit opens 5/9 - Images & Illustrations. This will feature etchings by Luigi Lucioni as well as other art from the centers permanent collections. This fabulous facility is a nice stroll or short drive from Thurston House.

If you have wonderful people in your life that have been there a long time, do you ever take the time to get together? Sometimes you just have to leave the "real world" and take the time. We have a group of 5 friends who get together as often as possible. Considering we live in several states, we do pretty good! The "Life Is Good" ladies got together here in Maine this past weekend. We laughed, we cried, we ate, we drank wine.... Three of us have been friends for almost 50 years! Sooooooo...if you have people who mean a lot to you and you haven't seen them for a while...JUST DO IT!!!! We lost one of us a few years back and learned this very important lesson! If you don't take the time you won't get the time.

Our unit in this lovely 1877 mansion called "Thorncroft Condominiums", is the one one the second floor with the little porch. It is not like our huge Thurston House porch, but we like it just fine!

Occasionally an innkeeper needs to step back and have a time away to recharge. We were thankfully smart enough over 20 years ago to buy a beautiful condo in York Harbor, Maine. It is an easy trip for us, just over one hour from Boston's Logan Airport. This is a beautiful area of historic homes, museums, and even a cliff walk that runs along ocean to a little beach. We call this our "Northern Bliss". I am feeling better already!

What does an innkeeper do when life calls us in a different direction for a moment? Take the time!!! A dear friend's Mom passed away Christmas Day and she was just buried this past weekend. I was blessed to have known her almost 50 years. She was a very special person to many people, and this past weekend's burial showed that. There was a bench dedicated to her and also to her husband who passed away a few years back. It is at the Holden trailhead of the Wachusett Greenways. This is a wonderful system of trails covering several towns, including Holden where I grew up. People enjoy these trails in every season...hiking, walking, bird watching and cross country skiing. It is all maintained by volunteers, people like our friend's Bob & Rosalie. It is amazing that "those next door neighbors" and "Cathy's parents" became "Carole & Joe's friends" in later years. They are much missed! Did you ever wonder who those people are happily enjoying breakfast on my Thurston House website? Well, now you know!

Birds Abound!

Founded in 1979, the Audubon Center for Birds of Prey in Maitland has treated over 12,000 injured or orphaned birds of prey. More than 40% have been able to be released back into the wild! This well known facility is just a short walk from Thurston House. Probably some of the spectacular birds we see flying around and fishing in Lake Eulalia are birds who have taken up residence at the center at one time or another. For that hard to buy for person, the center has an Adopt-a-Bird program. Sponsor a bird and receive an adoption certificate and photo, an introductory membership to Audubon, and annual newsletter and invitations to special events.

AND.......did you know that this spectacular museum is only minutes away from the only Winter Park area bed & breakfast, Thurston House? Eatonville, a small town just to our west, is the oldest Incorporated African American Municipality in the United States. It was home to the writer Zora Neale Hurston for many years. Her books were often based on her experiences here. Maitland was even mentioned in the book Their Eyes Were Watching God, made into a movie by Oprah Winfrey and starring Halle Berry. There is a museum open to the public all year round, and a self guided historic walking tour. Stay at Thurston House in January to attend the yearly festival held in Zora's honor. The weekend street festival ends the festivities, and is only a short walk down the street.

On the shores of Lake Lily are the offices of one of the premier historical society's, The Maitland Historical Society. This very active group has done wonders since we have been here, and there are many exciting future plans. Right now the society has a history museum on Packwood Avenue that houses various exhibits, a telephone museum and a reference library. This is several blocks from Lake Lily. On Lake Lily is their office building, Carpenter's Shop Museum and the Waterhouse Residence Museum. Exciting plans to bring all of the facilities together came about when a development company, The Morgan Group, pledged $1 million dollars towards a future vision that includes a learning center that will allow visitors to explore the human experience through the stories of one Central Florida town. Guests at Thurston House have enjoyed both museums, just a short walk away.

Little cars EVERYWHERE!!!

As stated before, Joe loves cars! So when he noted a car show in the paper, off we went to see all sorts of mini cars. There was even a celebrity at the event, Dennis Gage of My Classic Cars on SpeedTV. Joe was so excited!!! There were all sorts of Mini Coopers, Fiats, Smart Cars, and all kinds of other obscure brands. A perfect day for Joe!

Because I was being supportive, I got to go to my favorite bookstore that was right up the street - Legible Leftovers. After that, a stroll around Sanford's waterfront and a quick stop at Panera's for sandwiches to eat on our beautiful porch made this a PERFECT DAY for all.

Guests always wonder what we may have available nearby for their nightly dinnertime. We are very fortunate to have almost any kind of food you may want, and most within a ten minute drive. I have a menu book to refer to once here, but for those who like to do advance planning (highly recommended!), there are lists of a lot of the restaurants on the Thurston House Important links page. There is Italian, Turkish, Indian, French, Cheesecake, Thai.....ETC... All quite yummy and all close by. An all time favorite local Maitland place is Antonio's. Downstairs is their deli/cafe and upstairs their more fine dining Trattoria. Some regulars will go downstairs the first night, then have a nice relaxed special dinner the next night upstairs.

This seems to be a question on everyone's mind these days. At Thurston House we have been doing everything we can to help our planet. We place tent cards on each bed stating that you can hang up your towels to be reused another day. It also states that if you want your bed remade with fresh sheets, leave this on the bed. If it is not left on the bed we will just make it, not change the sheets. This has been a tremendous help in saving energy by doing less laundry! We also use low energy light bulbs wherever we can, and have light sensors and timers throughout the property. Guest rooms have had individual thermostats for years but we recently added newer and much more efficient programable ones. Guests want and do get bottled water in each room, but some actually refill them from our refrigerator. It is filtered water. We do recycle too, with all newspapers, bottles and cans being taken weekly. If everyone can do their part and turn off lights and turn up the A/C, what a tremendous thing for us all!

FLORIDA FILM FESTIVAL - EAT IT UP! Just around the corner from us is the Enzian Theater, a great place to watch movies and enjoy food & drink in a comfortable setting. Starting this Friday they host the annual Florida Film Festival, running from March 28 through April 6th. Guest stars to appear this year are Anthony Bourdin, Jennifer Tilly and Mary Stuart Masterson. Thurston House is just minutes away from the Enzian so it is a perfect place to stay!

We are very fortunate to have a spectacular garden only 15 minutes away from us - Leu Gardens. This is just one of a group of many reciprocal gardens associated with the American Horticultural Society. Experience the largest camellia collection in the south, the largest formal rose garden in Florida, a butterfly garden and many other types of gardens spread throughout the over 50 acres.

Events are held throughout the year...date nights, movie nights, camellia shows and plant sales. Our favorite things to do is attend the jazz strolls, held Spring & Fall. The garden closes early to ready for the nights event. Three jazz bands set up in various corners of the gardens for your listening pleasure. Pack your picnic food & drink, grab your chairs and pick that special person to come with you...fabulous evening under the stars! This is a ticket only event and is usually sold out. The next one is the Spring Jazz Stroll and is held May 10....PLAN AHEAD!!! A stay at Thurston House would be a perfect end to this great evening.

If you can't make it to any of the annual events, just go to the garden any day. It is open most every day of the year. I had the pleasure of taking Joe's parents there recently. It was just perfect!

Rollin's College - Nestled in the picturesque community of Winter Park on the shores of Lake Virginia, Rollins College captures the best of Florida's warmth and sunshine while offering the top-ranked education in the state. Founded in 1885, Rollins is Florida’s oldest recognized college. It's impossible to walk the tree-lined campus or step inside one of the handsome Spanish Mediterranean-style buildings without sensing the College's impressive history.

March 20th would have been Mr. Fred Roger's 80th birthday. The local claim to fame is that he attended Rollin's College. There is a special exhibit going on now in honor of this event. Also, next weekend, 3/28 & 3/29, will bring a class reunion group - 18 different class years at the same event.

Fabulous weather is planned again this week. Happy St. Pat's to all! I think a little corned beef is in our future today. All the local Irish joints will be hopping tonight. The closest to us is Fiddler's Green in Winter Park. Typical Irish fare is always available, from Fish & Chips to Irish Stew, to Bangers and Mash...you get the picture. They also feature local Irish bands sharing great music.

Coming up this weekend is Easter...rooms are still available so hurry to make a reservation. Many local restaurants are featuring wonderful menus for this special day.

There is lots is going on in the yard right now, but the most spectacular thing is a beautiful tall iris. Our hairdresser, Donna, gave us many bulbs that we distributed all over the yard. This one just opened and seems to really love its' new home!

Those of you who have stayed here know how Joe loves his cars. The many car books in the back parlour are a BIG hint! Some of you have even had the pleasure in seeing his latest (and longest running) car project....his 1973 Porsche 914. He lately has been starting the return back to it's original color - yellow. He has finished painting the brake calipers and hopes to get more done soon. He has also repacked the front wheel bearings and put in new tie rod ends. After his honey-do list is done on Saturday the garage is where he can be found.

Today is the day guests arrive to attend the Winter Park Sidewalk Arts Festival. It promises to be a perfect weekend for weather - warm & sunny all 3 days!

A new event in Maitland is the Maitland Community Farmers Market. This started just after the first of the year and has gotten bigger and better each week. When we walked around a couple of weeks ago we saw for sale everything from fresh corn on the cob (YUMMMMMM!), honey made in Winter Park, great breads and scones, fresh pasta...... This event is every Sunday from 8am-2pm. Don't miss it!

Reflecting again...15 years and more!

It's hard to believe we have been open for so long. Thurston House opened it's doors on September 15, 1992. Unfortunately, the first guests weren't for a couple weeks. Where were all the people who called during the renovations? It has been a journey for sure! When I first opened it was imperative to have a great brochure and to do a lot of print advertising. The Internet changed everything. I rarely if ever get calls for a brochure to be sent and 90% of reservations come through my Website as well as others I pay to be on. I usually do not talk to the guests besides e-mail until they arrive.

Well, we enjoy over 50% repeat business here and have had guests from 50 states, 21 countries and 3 territories. It has been very interesting to talk to these people and hear their views on life, work, and everything else. Our porch is a magical place where problems are solved and stress disolves away.

As a celebration of this momentous 15 year milestone I broke the bank and ordered my first Cloth & Clay mugs. They are considered the Cadillac of inn mugs. You can go to their website and see where there are inns who have these. Some travel around specifically to these inns to add to their collection...interesting!

Sometimes I wonder what Mr. Thurston would think of what we have accomplished here at his "beautiful orange grove near Maitland Florida"....the words from his Minneapolis obituary.

It is odd getting used to how dark it is in the morning now. It is almost 7am and very dark still. It is to be another wonderful and sunny day, with warmer temperatures - 70-ish. This month marks 15 years of Nancy working with me as a cleaner, and so much more. Many of you have enjoyed chatting with her, and comments are always made about how clean the rooms are!

The yard is beautiful right now with the camellia's still flowering, azaela's too, and the orange trees have just started blossoming.

Well, the businesswoman guest is already gone and the next breakfast is at 8am - Fresh Peaches, Pecan & Sausage Stuffed French Toast and Blueberry Muffins. Until next time!

Well, last nights work is done and new guests have arrived early. They were anxious to get here and start the relaxing! Porch time is coming soon and most try to arrive by 5pm just for that. Most problems of the world have been resolved on our porch....more tomorrow!

Early Morning Reflections

Lost an hour this morning, something never good for an innkeeper. Thankfully I do a lot of advance work so in the morning I can have that all important "ME" time. A cup of early coffee and a little local news does wonders! Cool here in Maitland today....I know, those of you up north are laughing but it really did get cool. It was only 40 when I arrived in my kitchen before 7am. It will be a gorgeous day here in Central Florida, or as we call Maitland - "New England With Palm Trees". The oven is heating, early coffee is out for guests, the sun is creeping over the trees, the lake is shining and the birds are singing....AHHHHHHHHHH........ After yesterday's blustury winds the stillness is most welcome this morning. Today we greet one of our business travel regulars and a wonderful couple from Connecticut for their 6th stay with us. HELLO Charlene & Dave! Coming up later this week is one of the favorite events of the year - the Winter Park Arts Festival. This is a juried festival of amazing art held right on Park Avenue in Winter Park. Bookings are made here one year in advance, usually the same folks, so it is nice to greet old friends. Well, the oven is beeping so I am "ON". More later......
